David Basanta
David Basanta
In the beginning, there was chaos, then David was born and, according to the 2nd law of thermodynamics, things did not improve a lot.
David entered the School of Computer Science at the University of Oviedo (his outstanding application ranked 47th among the 105 applicants of that year). After spending too much time in the computer lab and in the coffee bar and maybe not a lot at the lecture rooms, he received his degree in Computer Science in 2000. In the peak of the Internet boom he went on to work for Nortel Networks at their Maidenhead labs (UK) where he had the chance of designing software for very expensive machines and drink vey cheap coffee. Missing university life and better quality coffee, David joined King's College London in November 2001 as a research student in the Materials Research Group group of Dr. Mark Miodownik and finally gained a PhD. After a brief postdoc at Dr. Buzz Baum's group at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research also in London, David joined Dr. Andreas Deutsch's IMC group at Technische Universität Dresden where he claimed to be working on computer models of cancer evolution.
Since 2008 David is working with Dr. Sandy Anderson at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa while aiming to fulfill a long held wish of giving an academic talk in a kilt and Hawaiian shirt and not having people laughing at him (so far he has not managed either of the two).
