David Basanta

In the beginning, there was chaos. After a (relatively) long time David was born and, according to the 2nd law of thermodynamics, things did not improve much.

David entered the School of Computer Science at the University of Oviedo (his outstanding application ranking 47th among the 105 applicants of that year). After spending too much time in the computer lab and in the coffee bar and maybe not so much at the lecture rooms, he somehow managed to get a degree in Computer Science in 2000. In the peak of the Internet boom, just before the bubble burst, he went on to work for Nortel Networks at their Maidenhead labs (UK) where he had the chance of designing software for very expensive machines and drink very cheap coffee. Missing university life and better quality coffee, David joined King's College London in November 2001 as a research student in the Materials Research Group group of Dr. Mark Miodownik and finally gained a PhD. After a brief postdoc at Dr. Buzz Baum's group at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research also in London, David joined Dr. Andreas Deutsch's IMC group at Technische Universität Dresden where he claimed to be working on computer models of cancer evolution.

Since 2008 David is working at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, first as a postdoc at Sandy Anderson’s group and since 2011 as the fearless (shameless?) leader of a one-man group.
